The State of the Union address should not be an event where the "Equal Time" rule is applied. My limited on-line research since last night's event supports my gut feeling. I am a liberal through and through, but I don't want the words of the President of my country, no matter what his political affiliation, to be discounted when performs his duties as outlined in Article II, Section 3, of our constitution. So far I found no reason why the State of the Union address shouldn't be exempt from the requirements of Section 315 of the Communications Act of 1934 because it is an on-the-spot news event similar to the broadcasting of the Senate and House sessions. I know that my feelings are coming a year after your post, but I needed to respond in support of your observations in 2011.Carol Brown of Kingston, TNnoreply@blogger.com
