BLACK Smoke On First Ballot: No Pope!

Though they were not required to take a vote today, the cardinals have voted in the Sistine Chapel and on the first ballot there has been no decision.
That means that none of the potential cardinal candidates for pope achieved the necessary 77 votes among the 115 cardinals to be elected pope.
The “princes of the church” have been deliberating inside the Vatican since swearing an oath of secrecy and entering the papal conclave at about 5 p.m. local time (12 p.m. ET).
The smoke when the ballots were burned with chemical cartridges being added to ensure the smoke did not appear to be white which would have been the sign that a decision has been reached.
