Victory Is Ours!

Saturday, November 22!

We won. The Iraq War is over!

November 22, 2008 is "Victory in Iraq Day." (Hereafter known as "VI Day.") Thousands of blogs across America are joining with zombietime.com in the celebration of this day.
By every measure, The United States and coalition forces have conclusively defeated all enemies in Iraq, pacified the country, deposed the previous regime, successfully helped to establish a new functioning democratic government, and suppressed any lingering insurgencies. The war has come to an end. And we won. What more indication do you need? An announcement from the outgoing Bush administration? It's not gonna happen. An announcement from the incoming Obama administration? That's really not gonna happen. A declaration of victory by the media? Please. Don't make us laugh. A concession of surrender by what few remaining insurgents remain in hiding? Forget about it.

The moment has come to acknowledge the obvious. To overtly declare a fact that has already been true for quite some time now. Let me repeat:

WE WON THE WAR IN IRAQ!

How about Progress in Iraq Day.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that we've made amazing progress in Iraq; and I'll give credit where credit is due: the service men and women that made it happen, despite the bungling of every level of goverment, both here and in Iraq. But "VI" day looks a lot like "Mission Accomplished".
Don't make the mistake of jumping on this too fast, like a lot of other people are doing for political or selfish reasons.
This thing is not over; we'll be there for three more years; we'll have to deal with the Mahdi army as well as the "peacekeepers" we've been buying; we have to deal with Trukey and the Kurdish problem. And for those of you who still want to delcare Victory for the sake of making a cool banner, do this for me; send that cool banner to the family of the next soldier that dies. Ask them if the war is over.

Yes, Draco - You have made a good observation.
Of course you've also made a good argument for staying in Iraq.
So now, this is Obama's problem. It's up to him to keep the kind of force we need there to maintain what we have accomplished and finish the work that comes with victory just as we had to manitain some type of force in other nations where we won the peace.
It will be tough for him because his whole approach was based on the futility of the Iraq invasion and predicated on defeat.
And of course he's been hoplessly unwilling to admit that he may have been wrong.
Well, now the time for action - one way or another - is upon us.
