Following New jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney's recent announcement of support for Republican efforts to reform sick leave rules for public employees to a 'use it or lose it' system, Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. is encouraging Senator Sweeney to post the measure in the next Senate voting session:
"Senate Republicans have repeatedly attempted to force votes on a 'use it or lose it' system that would eliminate the outrageous jackpot payouts to public employees for sick leave," he said. "I am pleased that the Senate President now sees the folly in allowing a system to continue that has forced municipalities to borrow money to pay retiring employees, sometimes to the tune of six figure checks for one person. The version of this reform passed previously by the Legislature and, rightly, vetoed by the Governor did not go far enough because it only capped payments for unused time rather than eliminating them outright. I encourage the Senate President to post this reform for a vote at the next scheduled Senate voting session, and offer any assistance my caucus can provide to that end."
Senate Republicans have sought three votes on Sick Leave Reform that requires employees to 'Use It or Lose It'. Each attempt was defeated by the Majority. (S-2022, Motion to Sa (Kyrillos), 9/30/11; S-2022, Motion to make Order of the Day (Kyrillos), 3/3/2011; S-2022, Motion to make Order of the Day (Kyrillos), 7/12/11.
