GOP's Kyrillos Acts To Generate $$$ For NJ Businesses
New Jersey State Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) has garnered Democratic support for legislation he introduced today to allow New Jersey residents to invest in New Jersey-based businesses, while the SEC continues to delay full implementation of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (“JOBS Act”).
“I’m pleased to share that this vital economic growth measure has so quickly garnered Democratic support so that we have the opportunity to swiftly get it to the Governor,” Kyrillos said. “This legislation will help generate much-needed capital for New Jersey entrepreneurs to start and grow their products and services, as federal regulators continue to debate how to fully implement the JOBS Act. The crowd funding aspect should have been implemented some 273 days ago.”
Senator Kyrillos announced this initiative on Sept. 25, and Senator Ray Lesniak (D-20) has agreed to sign on as a prime co-sponsor to help get this job-creation measure posted for a vote and passed through the Legislature. Senators Kyrillos and Lesniak recently worked together as sponsors of the “Economic Opportunity Act of 2013” signed into law this month by Gov. Chris Christie to spur job creation across the state.
Senator Kyrillos’ intrastate crowd funding legislation will allow New Jersey-based entrepreneurs to seek up to $1 million in private investment in increments of up to $5,000 from unaccredited investors residing in New Jersey. The bill permits Internet solicitations. Other states such as Georgia, North Carolina, Kansas and Wisconsin have already taken action on similar measures while awaiting full implementation of the JOBS Act. The components of this bill would be administered by the New Jersey Bureau of Securities.
“The JOBS Act allows start-ups to advertise a financial need online, so we must let those in New Jersey take advantage by clearing the way for responsible investments here,” Kyrillos added.

Cruz Wins Cirucci Blog Poll With 50%; Others Lag
Maybe it was that non-fillibustering filibuster.
Maybe it's his sheer moxie -- his brio, his derring-do.
Whatever the reason, Ted Cruz won our informal GOP presidential poll running away by garnering 50% of the votes in a wide field.
Second was Sarah Palin with 14% and third was Scott Walker with 8%. All of the rest were in the low single digits.
Thanks for participating, everybody!

Pope Sets Up Cardinals' Council To Assist Him
We publish below the full text of the Chirograph by by which the Holy Father institutes a Council of Cardinals to assist him in the governance of the universal Church and to draw up a project for the revision of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor bonus on the Roman Curia.
“Among the suggestions that emerged from the General Congregations of Cardinals prior to the Conclave, mention was made of the expediency of instituting a limited group of Members of the Episcopate, from various parts of the world, with whom the Holy Father could consult, individually or collectively, on specific matters. Once elected to the See of Rome, I have had the opportunity to reflect on this issue on a number of occasions, and consider that such an initiative would be of significant use in fulfilling the pastoral ministry of Peter’s Successor entrusted to me by my brother cardinals. The chirograph is dated 28 September 2013, the first year of Francis' Pontificate.
“For this reason, on 13 April I announced the constitution of the aforementioned group, at the same time indicating the names of those who had been called to participate. Now, following reflection, I consider it opportune that such a group, by means of the present Chirograph, be instituted as a 'Council of Cardinals', with the task of assisting me in the governance of the universal Church and drawing up a project for the revision of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor bonus on the Roman Curia. It will be composed of the same persons previously nominated, who may be called upon, both in Council and singly, on matters that I will from time to time consider worthy of attention. The aforementioned Council which, with regard to the number of members, I will compose in the most appropriate way, will constitute a further expression of Episcopal communion and of the aid to the munus petrinum that the Episcopate, disseminated throughout the world, may offer”.
What's The Government Shutdown Really All About?
What's really happening in Washington as the shutdown showdown continues and the deadline approaches?
Here's how it goes:
Harry Reid will likely shut down the government to keep forcing ObamaCare on the American people.ObamaCare is succeeding in some things – it's successfully destroying the 40 hour work week, costing people their jobs, and causing people to lose access to their doctors.
Republicans are leading. They've sent Harry Reid and Senate Democrats a bill that will keep the government open and delay ObamaCare by one year.
But rather than admit that ObamaCare has been an absolute failure and allow for a one year delay of the entire law, Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi would rather shut down the government.
The Democrats can prevent this.
But they don't seem to want to.

Photo Essay: Longwood Gardens - A Natural Treasure!
Here in the Philadelphia region we are experiencing absolutely wonderful early autumn weather -- mild and gorgeous beyond belief with magnificent blue skies, gentle breezes, cooler temperatures and just enough sunlight to warm everyone's spirit.
And nowhere is all of this more evident than at nearby Longwood Gardens. We visited yesterday and the above photos are the result.
Longwood Gardens is a place where garden design, horticulture, education, and the arts interplay to inspire and enlighten people of all ages.
One of the world’s great gardens, Longwood’s story is one of legacy, innovation, and stewardship.
The Gardens are a living expression of all that their founder, Pierre S. du Pont, found inspiring, meaningful, and beautiful. From the intricate fountain systems to the meticulous gardens to the architectural grandeur, awe-inspiring discoveries await at every turn.
Years before it was a public garden, the land on which Longwood Gardens stands was home to the native Lenni Lenape tribe and Quaker farmers. Since then, the land has undergone significant transformation to become the magnificent property that is enjoyed by more than a million guests each year.
Every season at Longwood is a new discovery. And autumn is a special treat.
You owe it to yourself to take advantage of this priceless gem as soon as possible!

Christie Signs Legislation To Help Veterans
Building on his record of support for New Jersey’s veterans and their families, New jersey Governor Chris Christie today signed legislation requiring the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), upon submission of satisfactory proof, to indicate a veteran status on a driver’s license or identification card. The legislation will allow for easier access to services and incentives for veterans by conveniently identifying them as a former member of the Armed Forces. It builds on the “County Identification Cards for Veterans Act” signed by Governor Christie in 2012 that empowered county officials to create identification cards for resident veterans.
“Providing every possible support for New Jersey’s veterans and their families has been a priority of mine since taking office,” said Governor Christie. “Plain and simple, this legislation will make life easier and more convenient for veterans of all ages. With this single point of identification, veterans will now have easier access to services and discounts at businesses across the state, which is the least we can do for the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to serve our nation.”
Governor Christie signed the bill during the 28th annual Governor’s military review and awards ceremony in Sea Girt, an event he participates in each year as the Commander-In-Chief of the New Jersey National Guard. This was the first military review since Superstorm Sandy.
“When tragedy struck last year, the men and women of our National Guard played an instrumental role in keeping our citizens safe and secure,” added Governor Christie. “By helping evacuate, shelter, and provide food and water until folks could return home, the National Guard stood with New Jersey during its darkest hours, and we will all be forever grateful.”
Throughout his term in office, Governor Christie has supported New Jersey’s veterans and their families through increased funding and support for various veterans-based housing, employment, and educational services and programs, including increased funding for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA) in the Governor’s Fiscal Year 2014 Budget. He also has signed a series of job-creating bills for veterans, including measures easing access to teaching, nursing, and EMT certificates, extending occupational licenses after returning from active service, and making it easier to obtain Commercial Drivers Licenses. Additional information for veterans programs and services is available on DMAVA’s website here.

Gallup Poll: Public Has Lost Faith In Obama
A new Gallup survey sheds some light on how Americans perceive President Obama, and it may not be what the Democrats want to hear.
Here are some of the results from the poll:
Here are some of the results from the poll:
- Less than half of Americans feel that the President share their values.
- 56% of Americans believe that the President cannot manage government effectively.
- The majority of Americans don't believe he can get things done.
- A whopping 62% of Americans do not think President Obama has a clear plan for solving the country's problems.
- 60% do not believe he works well with both parties in Washington.
- The majority of Americans feel that he puts his political interests ahead of the interests of the nation.
Delay Obamacare Or Government Shuts Down
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and GOP Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following joint statement:
“The American people don’t want a government shut down and they don’t want ObamaCare. That’s why later today, the House will vote on two amendments to the Senate-passed continuing resolution that will keep the government open and stop as much of the president’s health care law as possible.
“The first amendment delays the president’s health care law by one year. And the second permanently repeals ObamaCare’s medical device tax that is sending jobs overseas.
“Both of these amendments will change the date of the Senate CR to December 15th. We will also vote on a measure that ensures our troops get paid, no matter what.
“We will do our job and send this bill over, and then it’s up to the Senate to pass it and stop a government shutdown.”
When Politics Worked? Exactly When Was That?
A certain BigMouth TV yapper (who appears regularly on MesSNBC) is out with a new epistle about a once-upon-a-time era "when politics worked."
This champion bloviator and relentless book huckster is a hopeless Obama worshiper who has admitted he gets a tingle up his leg at the mere sight of Obama. He's a congenital liberal who once worked for Democrat Boss and fellow Irishman Tip O'Neill and he also worked for the most ineffective president of modern times, Jimmy Carter.
In an effort to bolster O'Neill's image and put the former Speaker of the House on an equal plain with Ronaldus Maxus, he would have us believe that O'Neill and Ronald Reagan were best buds who worked together to advance if not the same, at least a similar agenda. Phooey!
Nothing could be further from the truth.
This is classic liberal revisionist history by people who want you to conclude that the only reason why things don't seem to be working now is because Republicans are preventing government from functioning. Forget the fact that Obama constantly castigates all those who oppose him and that he engages in 24/7 campaigning instead of governing and that he won't even negotiate with the opposite party that controls the House of Representatives and most state governments. According to liberal revisionists, it's all just the GOP's fault.
But let's get back to that "hunky-dory' relationship between Tip and Ron, okay?
Here are the facts:
Tip O'Neil and other liberals were condescending to Reagan and dismissed President Reagan as an "amiable dunce." Of Reagan, former Democrat Defense Secretary and advisor to Dem presidents Clack Clifford said at the time: "Poor dear, there's nothing between his ears."
As Speaker of the House, Tip O'Neill presided over 12 funding gaps or government shutdowns. Was that politics that worked?
Politics is a bloodsport - then, now and probably in the future as well. As Harry Truman once said of Washington: "If you ant a friend in this town, get a dog."
Except perhaps for times of extreme national crisis when our nation was under attack by foreign forces (2011, 1942, etc.) the parties and their leaders have pretty much always been at each other's throats.
That's the way politics is.
That's the nature of the beast.
And anybody who would have you believe otherwise is s snake-oil salesman. For he is engaging in the very same political shenanigans that he pretends to decry.

Tip O'Neill said that Ronald Reagan “has no concern, no regard, no care for the little man in America. And I understand that. Because of his lifestyle, he never meets those people.”
O'Neill even blasted Reagan further, claiming in 1984 that "the evil is in the White House at the present time. And that evil is a man who has no care and no concern for the working class of America and the future generations of America, and who likes to ride a horse. He’s cold. He’s mean. He’s got ice water for blood."
Indeed, Steven F. Hayward has written in Commentary:
The hostilities between parties and ideologies in Washington during Reagan’s presidency make the present day look tame by comparison. No president in modern times has ever been as reviled [as Reagan]. And the hatred of Reagan [by liberals] was justified, to some degree, because his presidency, in the rueful words of the journalist Richard Reeves a decade ago, “damned near destroyed American liberalism.”So, there was no love lost between Reagan and O'Neill nor between Republicans and Democrats in the 1980s. And the same holds true for just about any era in American history.

Christie Honors Parents Of Fallen Military
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today issued the following statement in recognition of Parents of Fallen Military Sons and Daughters Day:
“We pause to honor the mothers and daughters of our fallen soldiers, who continue to inspire our nation in the face of incredible loss and sadness. For any parent, the thought of losing a child is incomprehensible, but the courage, strength and resolve of these parents who channel their grief into supporting fellow military families and servicemembers is truly awe-inspiring. In their sacrifice and selflessness, we see the best of what America has to offer. They speak to the character of our nation and encourage us to continue our duty and responsibility as Americans to honor and support them and their families. On behalf of parents across the state of New Jersey, Mary Pat and I honor and thank these extraordinary parents for continuing to be pillars of strength for our military communities and families.”
In 2011, Governor Christie signed legislation creating the Gold Star Family license plate for families of fallen servicemembers who lost their lives while serving on active duty for the United States.
Governor Christie also issued a proclamation marking September 29, 2013 as “Parents of Fallen Military Sons And Daughters Day” throughout New Jersey.

Religious Liberty: Join In Fighting The Good Fight
A special message from the Cardinal Newman Society:
The Cardinal Newman Society and many Catholic organizations are represented in a class action lawsuit filed yesterday by the Christian Brothers Employee Benefits Trust and the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Trust's health insurance plan – rooted in Catholic principles – is for us and other Catholic groups a last wall of defense against federal and state violations of religious freedom. With its "HHS mandate," the Obama administration threatens to take away our right to morally appropriate health insurance, but this lawsuit now stands in the way. The suit underscores the stark choice presented by the Obama administration: either abandon the faith or comply. Think of the impact on Catholics across the country, if the Newman Society and other Catholic apostolates are crippled by financial penalties. We've already done so much to support religious freedom (check out our resources here), and we're not backing down now. Please pray for victory in the courts! And here's good reason for the survival of your Cardinal Newman Society: Whereas Loyola Marymount University seemed to drop abortion coverage in its health plan, responding to faculty concerns and our inquiries, many faculty are still fighting for abortion coverage. See the articles below, including our report on RenewLMU, a group that is urging the University to stay true to the Faith. And see our intrepid reporter Matt Archbold's most recent report on the Jesuit university law professor whose crusade for "transgender" rights has led him to reject marriage, sex-offender registries, drug and prostitution laws, and even the terms "male" and "female." This is one of the most radical professors at a Catholic university that we've ever come upon. - Patrick J. Reilly, President |
Christie: Let Gay Marriage Go To NJ Supreme Court
Basing her ruling on the recent US Supreme Court gay marriage decision, a New Jersey trial court judge has ruled that the state must allow gay New Jerseyans to marry. The state currently permits civil unions. But the ruling was made at the Superior Court level and it is possible for the decision to be appealed all the way to New Jersey's Supreme Court even though gay rights advocates are asking the state to simply accept today's ruling and not to appeal.
That does not seem to be in the cards.
The following was just released from Governor Chris Christies office:
A statement from the Governor’s press secretary, Michael Drewniak:
“Governor Christie has always maintained that he would abide by the will of the voters on the issue of marriage equality and called for it to be on the ballot this Election Day. Since the legislature refused to allow the people to decide expeditiously, we will let the Supreme Court make this constitutional determination.”

Christie Gets Big Support In Democrat Bayonne
Demonstrating community-wide support in a Democrat stronghold, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today announced the support of a broad cross-section of Bayonne leaders who represent nearly every facet of business, civic, cultural, professional, and religious life in the community.
Governor Christie traveled to Bayonne today to meet with these leaders, discuss the progress his Administration has made for the city, and accept their support in his campaign for reelection.
“Governor Christie is focused on getting the job done. He has reached across the aisle for Democrats to join him in enacting reforms that will make our state better for generations to come,” said Mike O’Connor, former Bayonne Democratic Municipal Chairman. “Here in Bayonne, Governor Christie has worked with our local officials to bring millions of dollars to our city, improving our roads and infrastructure, and invested in projects that boost the local economy and create jobs, including the raising of the Bayonne Bridge. For all that and much more, I am proud as a lifelong Democrat to join so many members of my party in standing with our governor and supporting his campaign.”
Bayonne, where Democrats outnumber Republicans in registration by a six to one margin (52.2% to 8.3%), was carried by President Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election by 33 points.
“These men and women span the business, religious, cultural, and civic groups that are the fabric of this community. It’s an honor to have their support today,” said Governor Christie. “Even more – I’m proud of what it says about how we’ve governed – focusing on results, getting important things done for our constituents, and delivering in a meaningful way for communities like Bayonne.”
Since taking office, Governor Christie has taken action to make real, tangible progress and secure critical investments benefitting Bayonne residents and the region. Construction is now underway on the $1.3 billion project to raise and modernize the Bayonne Bridge, creating more than 2,500 construction jobs here in New Jersey. The total regional economic impact of the project will result in approximately $380 million in annual wages, and $1.6 billion in annual economic activity.
Governor Christie is providing state support for K-12 schools in New Jersey at the highest level in history – more than any other governor, ever. As part of that commitment Governor Christie’s Fiscal Year 2014 budget increased state aid to Bayonne schools by nearly $500,000. Further, the Christie Administration has provided $13.5 million in SDA funding to upgrade nine public schools in Bayonne.
Today’s announcement adds to the extensive cross-aisle support Governor Christie has earned in Hudson County, including State Senator Brian Stack and all four Union City Commissioners, Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli and all six members of the Secaucus Town Council, Harrison Mayor Ray McDonough and all eight members of the Harrison City Council.
Bayonne Community Leaders Standing With Governor Christie:
Mike O'Connor, former Bayonne Democratic Committee Chairman and current committee member
John Majmundar, Bayonne Chamber of Commerce, Member
Elizabeth Jessen, former Bayonne Democratic Committee member
Bishop Dr. Thomas Robinson, Pastor, Evangelical Gospel Tabernacle, Bayonne
Michele Levine, President, Bayonne Jewish Community Center
Edward Mayo, former Bayonne Democratic Committee member

Tales of Cory Booker’s heroics (and the fuzzy details behind them) could easily fill a book, Save Jerseyans.
He’ll have to settle for a blog. Between now and the special Senate election on October 16th, I’m going to do my best to chronicle each and every gallant deed of Newark’s part-time mayor, full-time tweeter throughout the annals of time.
It’s “History According to Cory” as told by Save Jersey. And long before he was attending Wazne Miller, tweeting with strippers, running into burning buildings and chatting up T-Bone & friends…

Christie Proclaims Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Today, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed legislation changing “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in New Jersey from February to September, which is the same month that the country observes “National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.”
“Ovarian cancer affects thousands of New Jersey women and their families every single year,” said Governor Christie. “If detected early and treated properly, the survival rate for ovarian cancer increases more than 90 percent. Conforming with the nation’s observance of September as ‘National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month’ will increase awareness of ovarian cancer throughout New Jersey and help promote the importance of early detection and treatment to save lives.”
Often called the “silent disease” because of vague or subtle symptoms, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women and is the leading cause of gynecologic cancer deaths in New Jersey and the United States, affecting women from all walks of life. More than 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually, and more than 14,000 die from the disease each year.
The New Jersey Department of Health has partnered with the Teal Tea Foundation, a national campaign to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, to call on municipalities around the state to “Turn the Towns Teal” in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Spearheaded by the Department’s New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJCEED) screening program, municipalities are collaborating with community organizations to tie teal ribbons around trees, polls and buildings and distribute information on the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Governor Christie also issued a proclamation marking September 2013 as “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” throughout New Jersey

Obamacare: Cuccinelli Fought It; McAuliffe Praised It
"My opponent has wholeheartedly supported Obamacare, saying, “We gotta have it,” and “We’re better off now than we were before.” That's why I’ve released a new ad outlining the differences between my opponent and me. As the first attorney general to sue the federal government over Obamacare, I knew this bill would have devastating effects on the American people. I’ve fought against Obamacare before, and I will continue to fight against it as your Governor." -Ken Cuccinelli
New Poll Shows Obama Job Approval His New Low
In the new CBS poll, President Obama's job approval rating has hit a new low: 43%.
That's down from an earlier low in the last poll.
And, get this: His rating is no better among women. They only give him 43% as well. That's telling because women (for whatever reason) have always been among Obama's staunchest supporters.
Since early September, the president's approval rating among women has slipped a full seven points.
And there's more from the poll report:
These figures are not good. Not good at all.

Positive assessments of the president's handling of the economy has also dropped five points in the last two weeks, to 41 percent now. Just 40 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy, while 49 percent disapprove - the highest disapproval he has ever received on this measure. . . .
Personal evaluations of the president are also down. Thirty percent say he cares a lot about people like themselves - the lowest level measured since he took office. And people do not have a very rosy view of the future under President Obama. In fact, the percentage of Americans who think the country is headed in the wrong direction has risen. Just 29 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the right direction - down six points since July - while the percentage who says it is off on the wrong track has risen six points, from 60 percent in July to 66 percent today. The percentage who says the country is off on the wrong track is now the highest it has been in over a year.

Christie Signs Order To Hasten Dunes Construction
Taking aggressive and necessary action to build protective sand dunes, berms, engineered beaches and other flood hazard risk reduction measures to make New Jersey’s coastline and other flood-prone regions safer and more resilient to future storms, Governor Chris Christie today signed Executive Order No.140. Among other things, the Governor’s action will assist local communities by clearing the way for dune construction to protect countless homes and businesses along New Jersey’s 127 miles of shoreline.
The EO, which takes effect today, paves the way for the U.S Army Corps of Engineers to begin dune construction by doing two things:
· Directs Acting Attorney General John Hoffman to immediately coordinate legal action to acquire the necessary easements to build dunes; and
· Creates the Office of Flood Hazard Risk Reduction Measures within the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to lead and coordinate the efforts to acquire the necessary property to build dunes.
“It is a proven fact that having dunes along our coastline makes everyone safer, and today I’m acting to move the building process forward,” said Governor Christie. “As we rebuild from Superstorm Sandy, we need to make sure we are stronger, more resilient and prepared for future storms, and dunes are a major component of this process. I am doing everything in my power to get them in place as soon as possible. We can no longer be held back from completing these critical projects by a small number of owners who are selfishly concerned about their view while putting large swaths of homes and businesses around them at risk.”
As the Governor has previously noted, many of these recalcitrant property owners have held out with the hope of leveraging a major “pay day” from local governments for their easement agreements – for the “lost value” of their ocean views. But the Governor’s Executive Order comes less than 24 hours after a settlement between the Department of Environmental Protection, the Borough of Harvey Cedars, and a Harvey Cedars couple, in which the couple agreed to give the easement to the town in return for the sum of one dollar. The settlement, after years of litigation, was reached after the Supreme Court in July set aside an earlier verdict in the couple’s favor awarding them $375,000 for the value of their easement.
“The impact of that court ruling should now be clear to anyone who thinks they were in line for a big government check,” continued Governor Christie. “Sandy changed everything. It’s time to do the right thing to not only protect your own property, but the property of all your neighbors.”
When Sandy hit, oceanfront communities without dunes and other shore protection measures experienced significantly more catastrophic damage than communities with the protection measures in place. In its Sandy relief package, Congress allocated funds for dune construction , and New Jersey has begun the process of designing Flood Hazard Risk Reduction Measures for all appropriate areas of the New Jersey coastline. Some of the land on which this system of measures must be built is privately owned, and some residents have refused to grant easements to the state.

Pope Francis: Church Unites All Through Faith
The unity of the Church, dispersed around the world, was the theme chosen by Pope Francis for his catechesis during today's general audience in which over 40,000 people participated. “In the Creed”, he said, “we profess our faith in the Church, which is one, and this Church is in itself unity … even though it spreads across all the continents”.
Unity in faith, in hope, in charity, in the sacraments and the ministry, are “like the pillars that support and hold together the single great edifice of the Church. Wherever we go, even in the smallest parish, in the furthest corners of this earth, there is the One Church; we are at home, we are with our family, we are brothers and sisters. And this is a great gift from God! The Church is One for all. There is not one Church for Europeans, one for Africans, one for Americans, one for Asians, one for those who live in Oceania, but she is the same everywhere. And the Church is just like a family: the members may be far away, spread around the world, but the strong bonds that unite us all hold firm regardless of the distance”.
The Pope recalled that during the recent World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, which brought together so many cultures and languages, from so many places of origin, there was nonetheless a “profound unity, which formed a single Church, in whom all were united, and this could be felt”. “Let each one of us ask: do I feel this unity? Do I live this unity? Or am I not interested, am I one of those who would 'privatise' the Church for their own group, their own nation, their own friends? It is sad to encounter a privatised Church, as this form of selfishness indicates a lack of faith. Do we pray for each other? I wonder how many of you you pray for persecuted Christians, for those brothers or those sisters who suffer as a consequence of their faith? It is important to look over one's own fence, to feel part of the Church, of the single family of God”.
Francis then went on to ask whether there were any casualties of this unity, whether it could inflict harm, since “at times there arise misunderstandings, conflicts, tensions and divisions, which cause harm and then the Church does not have the face we would like, she does not manifest her charity, as God would want. We create those lacerations! And if we look at the divisions that still exist between Christians - Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants – we become aware of the effort that it takes to make this unity fully visible”. The Pope explained that although “God gives us unity”, we sometimes find it difficult to manifest it in our lives. “It is necessary to seek, to build communion, to educate in communion, to overcome misunderstandings and divisions. … Our world needs unity, reconciliation and communion, and the Church is the Home of Communion”.
Quoting St. Paul to the Ephesians, the Pope reiterated that in order to conserve unity it is necessary to have “humility, gentleness, magnanimity and love”, but this is not primarily the result of our consent or efforts, but rather comes from the Holy Spirit, which continually recreates the Church and creates “unity in diversity, which is harmony”. The Holy Father concluded by asking the Lord, as in the prayer of St. Francis, to help us never to become instruments of division, but rather to bring love where there is hate, forgiveness where there is injury and union where there is discord.
