Of course, popes have always gone to confession just as most other Catholics should. But no pope has ever been so openly depicted this way.
But the Holy Father wanted to make an important point.
Pope Francis is a great believer in the sacrament of forgiveness and has vigorously promoted reconciliation from the very start of his papacy. He attends confession every two weeks.
So - if he can do it, so can every other Catholic -- especially now during Lent.
