Sad That This Step Has To Be Taken, But . . . .

A resolution sponsored by New Jersey State Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) and Senator Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union, Somerset, Morris) to ensure better sportsmanship by players, coaches and spectators at youth sporting events was advanced by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.

“While they can get very competitive, youth sports should still be all about having fun,” Senator Allen said. “When people get too heated it ruins that fun for everyone else. Sometimes people just need a reminder about the rules, and hopefully, this will help ensure a good time for all.”

The resolution, SR-81, urges the state’s school boards and youth sports team organizations to post conspicuous signs at each sporting events in order to emphasize to players, parents, coaches and other attendees the rules and penalties under an athletic code of conduct.

It also urges them to make a verbal announcement about the rules prior to the start of any game to ensure the code of conduct is followed.

“These games aren’t deciding the World Series or the Super Bowl,” Senator Kean said. “It’s important to remember that they’re all about the kids. If everyone can be mindful of that, the players can focus on playing and giving the spectators something good to cheer about.”
