The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools (AOPS) have asked families to consider advocating local legislators to request Yellow Bus transportation for their children, our students, during the forthcoming academic year.
Under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, all school districts are required to provide transportation to both public and non-public schools, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. With many school districts throughout the five-county region moving to online learning for the upcoming school year there have not been assurances given to non-public schools that buses will continue to provide transportation for our students.
Mr. Jason Budd, Deputy Secretary for Government Relations for the Office of Catholic Education and Acting President of Bishop McDevitt High School said, "Catholic school parents do ‘double-civic duty’ when it comes to the public school funding formula. They pay their property and school taxes, and by sending their children to tuition based schools, they do not siphon away resources from public schools and public school students. These ‘equitable services,’ including transportation and nursing resources, are their rights as citizens of the Commonwealth."
The AOPS has engaged the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference (PCC) for assistance and has provided schools with the direction and material to share with families, staff, volunteers, constituents, and boards. To disseminate this urgent call to action, the PCC created a Voter Voice widget that allows those interested to easily advocate for the need of Yellow Bus transportation.
