Italian American Heritage Month: Perry Como

Perry Como

Today, spotlighting the life of Perry Como for Italian Heritage Month. Known for his genuineness, Pierino Ronald "Perry" Como, a mellow crooner was married to only one woman, Roselle Bellino. The two were happily married for 65 years, from 1933 to 1998.

He was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1912. Mr. Como worked as a barber in his hometown until embarking on a singing career. When not making major progress in a few bands, he returned to Canonsburg, but was lured back into show business, with the offer of his own radio show and possibly a recording career. He signed a recording contract with RCA Victor in 1943.

His most memorable songs are "Till the End of Time," "Prisoner of Love," "If," "Papa Loves Mambo," "Round and Round," "Catch a Falling Star," "Magic Moments," "Killing Me Softly With Her Song," "For the Good Times," "It's Impossible" and "And I Love You So." He was known as a true family man and a gentleman.

On top of a successful singing career, Como had a terrific TV show. One of the most interesting things to happen on TV was when he had a young singer on his show in 1961. It was Brenda Lee. While singing a duet with her on his show, she messed up on several lyrics out of nervousness. To put her at ease, Como messed up on one as well, something he never did before.

His song "Ave Maria" is still loved by many Italian Americans. In addition to that, his recording of "Home for the Holidays" is still a very popular song during Christmastime. This legendary entertainer passed away in 2001, just 3 years after his wife died. Fans of his who have met him say he was just as kind in person as he appeared on TV.
