This classic nouveau American eatery can be found downtown just off Union Square. We took a quick subway ride from the theater district to Union Square, an area that attracts hip young professionals.
In October of 1985, Danny Meyer opened his first restaurant, Union Square Cafe. A new breed of American eatery, USC paired imaginative food and wine with caring hospitality, comfortable surroundings and exceptional value. Serving American cuisine with an Italian soul, USC was an immediate hit.
Union Square routinely tops Zagat ratings and recently came in as New York's most popular restaurant. Reservations are a must and need to be booked exactly 30 days out as they will not be accepted any sooner and are often unavailable any later.
The drinks were perfectly mixed, the food was fresh and flavorful, the dessert was tasty and imaginative and the coffee was fragrant and full-bodied. Our choices: calimari, swordfish, spaghettini with halibut, polenta, apple tart and flourless chocolate cake.
Union Square Cafe is inviting and not the least bit stuffy. No pretenses; just the way we like it.
This is truly fine dining with relaxing, American informality. Nothing is rushed.
