Hollywood Nudity: Jane Skinny Dips For Tarzan
Nudity is not new to Hollywood. Not at all.
In the early days of movies, before the production code was enacted, nudity was more common in the movies than you might think.
In 1934, the film Tarzan And His Mate with Maureen O'Sullivan and Johnny Weissmuller included the scene shown above. The underwater sequence is not O'Sullivan but rather is performed by a double -- a professional swimmer.
The film was eventually censored because of pressure from religious groups and this portion was removed or altered. Nonetheless, producers, writers and directors remained exceptionally daring -- even nearly 80 years ago.
And this scene has survived long enough to be able to show it now.
