'Sleepwalk With Me' Could Be Year's Most Inventive

Could Mike Birbiglia's new film Sleepwalk With Me be the year's most original, most inventive film?
It certainly seems so.
Yes, Birbiglia's somewhat whiny narration can get tiresome.
And yes, the main character in this autobiographical comedy often gets bogged own in his own angst.
And sure, this is tale is talky and somewhat neurotic in the tradition of early Woody Allen.
But the scenes are frequently quick and crisp, the ensemble acting is great and the whole things feels wonderfully authentic and strangely endearing.
Winner of a 2012 Audience Award at Sundance, Birbiglia wrote, directed and stars in Sleepwalk With Me which is based on his off-Broadway show and bestselling book. This is also the first movie co-written by Ira Glass and co-produced by "This American Life." 
Here's the story: when an aspiring stand-up comic (Birbiglia) fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.
Not only does he not want to confront his sleepwalking problem but he also doesn't seem to want to confront the fact that he has to begin to grow up and decide what he wants to do with his life. And the whole thing reaches an often hilarious crescendo. 
In addition to Birbiglia, the film features Lauren Ambrose as his girlfriend, Carol Kane as his mother, James Rebhorn as his father and Cristin Milioti plus comedians Marc Maron, Kristen Schaal, Wyatt Cenac, Jessi Klein, Henry Phillips and David Wain. 
Mike Birbiglia is just one great storyteller. And the real tale that he tells here is like life itself: unexpected, funny, poignant, revealing and surprisingly appealing.
Plus, it's just wonderful to see Carol Kane back on the big screen again.
