The Philadelphia Flyers will host a special book drive benefitting Philadelphia Reads at the Flyers vs. St. Louis Blues game at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. Fans attending the game are encouraged to drop a new or gently used children’s book in special collection bins inside the Wells Fargo Center to contribute to the cause. Philadelphia Reads collects donated children’s books and school supplies to benefit city schools, totaling over two million books since its inception in 1997.
In support of the nationally recognized “Read Across America Month” children 12 and under attending the game will receive a free “Read to Succeed” Flyers bookmark featuring Flyers forward Matt Read.
Fans attending Saturday’s game can also save on youth merchandise, including select styles of orange and black t-shirts for just $10. Fans can shop from a variety of youth merchandise and accessories at the Fan Zone powered by Reebok located in the 11th Street atrium. Fan Zone opens at 11 a.m. Kid-friendly snack offers including Gozen Yogurt, Dippin Dots, funnel cake and cotton candy will be discounted.
Families will also be able to enjoy free, family-friendly activities on the concourse including a rainbow loom bracelet-making machine, Xbox gaming station, giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, ring toss and bean bag toss.
Flyers forward Scott Hartnell, on behalf of the HartnellDown Foundation, is personally donating more than 40 copies of his new book, “HARTNELLDOWN” in support of Philadelphia Reads. “HARTNELLDOWN”, a children’s book telling the story of Hartnell’s climb to success as a professional hockey player, is available for fans to purchase and donate if they wish, from the Flyers Charities kiosk on the main concourse behind Section 116.
During the month of March the Flyers Community Relations Department has visited more than 2,500 students in the greater Philadelphia region reading books and emphasizing the importance of education at local elementary schools for Read Across America Month.
