Tackling The Real Challenges We Face Now!
Here is a very special message from catholicvote.org:
I hope your week has gone well.
Here at CV, things have been dizzying. New health care fixes, immigration debates, tax reform talk, judges, anti-Catholic bigotry, Supreme Court cases, and more.
CV is focused on so many areas, it’s hard to decide what to share. So here goes:
Trump, Democrats, and DACA
President Trump and Democratic leaders are rumored to have struck a deal on DACA - protecting “dreamers” who were brought illegally into America as young kids. We support this, but politics involves both sides. President Trump has been heroic against heavy opposition from some Republicans in standing up for kids under DACA. Now Democrats must come to the table with concessions on border security. Will the Democrats compromise too or play politics?
Last chance on healthcare?
Both Democrats and Republicans released new health care bills to replace Obamacare this week. Isn’t it interesting to see Democrats admitting Obamacare is a trainwreck? Republican Senators Graham, Cassidy and Heller announced an Obamacare fix that would block grant Obamacare monies to individual states to customize plans, trim costs, and limit the role of the federal government.
As of today, the GOP bill would repeal the individual mandate and ensure several pro-life protections -- including prohibitions against using tax credits or HSAs for any insurance which covers elective abortions. The bill also defunds Planned Parenthood and redirects that money to community health centers that don’t perform elective abortions.
Senate Republicans will need to rally to get this done. According to reports, they are 2-3 votes shy. To use the reconciliation method, this bill must pass the Senate by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Democrats proposed “Medicare for all,” otherwise known as a massive government takeover of healthcare. Senators Bernie Sanders, Al Franken, and a dozen more Senators are behind this socialist scheme that experts agree would cost trillions of dollars. You can be sure CV will be there to oppose this bill and to tell the truth about socialized medicine. This is the future of healthcare if Democratic leaders get their way.
Judges, Judges, Judges
We wrote last week on the urgency of confirming new judges to the federal courts. The vacancies continue to mount and Democrats continue to stall the process. We need Senate Republicans to stop this mindless obstructionism. That’s the whole point of our educational campaign. The American people want the Senate to move forward with these nominations.
The good news is Senator McConnell appears ready to make some procedural changes to get things moving. The pressure is working. We can’t let up.
Meanwhile, one of the biggest stories of the week was the outrageous interrogation of Notre Dame Law Professor Amy Coney Barrett by Senators Dianne Feinstein and Dick Durbin. Feinstein has received considerable criticism (rightly so!) for questioning whether Barrett’s faith would imperil her impartiality as a judge. During a hearing last week, Feinstein blurted, “the dogma lives loudly in you.”
We fielded and responded to media calls all week, and produced this fun cartoon picked up by numerous media outlets to drive the message home: (click cartoon to enlarge)
