New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today issued the following statement on President Donald J. Trump’s Action on the opioid crisis:
"I commend the President on the bold action he is taking today by adopting the first recommendation of his Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis to declare a national emergency." Governor Christie is the Chair of the special presidential commission.
To quote directly from the interim report:
"The first and most urgent recommendation of this Commission is direct and completely within your control. Declare a national emergency under either the Public Health Service Act or the Stafford Act.'
"By using the Public Health Service Act, as we recommended, the President is showing an unprecedented commitment to fighting this epidemic and placing the weight of the Presidency behind saving lives across the country.
"The Commission will have an even more comprehensive set of recommendations in the report we will issue to the President on November 1st.
"We look forward to the President's remarks today and to the continued implementation of our comprehensive plan through this declaration in the weeks and months ahead."
