“Children of military service members face many unique responsibilities during their school years,” said Stanfield (R-8). “This legislation will allow schools to better evaluate the educational needs of military-connected students so that teachers can provide personalized academic support.”
Stanfield’s bill, S-87, requires the Department of Education to maintain an indicator for military-connected students in its student-level database. A military-connected student refers to a student enrolled in a public school in New Jersey who is a dependent of a member of the armed forces of the United States.
The bill also requires the Commissioner of Education to annually report statistics on the academic engagement and outcomes of these students, including attendance rates, performance on state assessments, and high school graduation rates.
“With this legislation, New Jersey will further its commitment to the men and women who serve this nation by supporting and recognizing the educational needs of all military children,” Stanfield added.
S-87 also gives parents the ability to opt out of the initiative so that their child will not be counted as a military-connected student in the Department of Education’s database.
