Penny's father was of Italian descent, his family having come from Abruzzo. Marshall's father changed his surname from Masciarelli to Marshall before she was born.
Penny Marshall rose to fame in the 1970s as Laverne DeFazio on the hit sitcom Laverne & Shirley, a role that showcased her knack for physical comedy and made her a household name.
Marshall later broke barriers behind the camera, becoming one of the first female directors to helm major box office hits. Her 1988 film Big, starring Tom Hanks, was the first directed by a woman to gross over $100 million. She followed with critically acclaimed works such as Awakenings (1990) and A League of Their Own (1992), both of which cemented her status as a director with a gift for blending humor and heart.
Penny Marshall passed away in 2018.
