And once again the economic news is not good. The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose unexpectedly last week, according to Labor Department data released just hours before President Barack Obama spoke to the Congress.
Applications for unemployment benefits rose to 414,000 from an already upwardly revised 412,000 the prior week. Wall Street had been looking for a dip to 405,000.
Now, nearly 1,000 days into his term, the President has released yet another version of his rehashed, repackaged, warmed-over jobs plan. And he's floating the idea of throwing more taxpayer money at the problem - thinking that the results will somehow be different than his previous, failed attempts. Obamanomics is not working for a reason: it is a set of bad ideas, poorly implemented. Instead of helping the economy recover, it's more likely to prolong the economic downturn.
Here are the facts:
- 25 million Americans are out of work, underemployed, or have given up looking for a job.
- Foreclosures are at near-record levels.
- Our national debt is almost the size of our entire economy.
- For the first time ever, our country's credit rating has been downgraded.
- Families are buried under higher prices for food and gas.

The countdown to November 2012 has begun and the country has to make a decision. We're not talking about mere statistics. Each one of Obama's failures affects our way of life; each one affects our standard of living; and each one is vivid proof that Obama Isn't Working.

Let's see...how much of the debt existed before Obama took office, and how much is a result of two unfunded wars and unfunded tax cuts? And if conservative policies were the cure all, why is it that with six, not two, years of complete government control did the GOP not put into place the policies that would have had our economy booming instead of crashing over a cliff?
Some of the electorate may have short memories, but many of us know full well how we got into this mess, and tired old neocon talking points aren't going to make us forget.
Facts don't lie: During his nearly three years in office President Obama has raised the debt more than ALL other presidents before him -- and he's raising it at a far more rapid rate than ever before. He just asked for another half trillion last night.
Polls show that the American people no place this economy squarely in Obama's lap -- they now feel he's responsible. The people are right. Obama isn't working! And those who supported him will be well advised to face the facts and begin to understand that we need to change.
Change to what? The last Republican to lower the debt? Nixon (second term). The last President to reduce the debt? Clinton (both terms...and he left a surpluss in the annual budget, which was squandered by the next guy). Bush II increaded the debt in both terms, ending with roughly a $10 trillion debt. Obama has added to it, having inherited the abject failure of the GOP (and the economy crashing off a cliff).
So what do we get from the GOP? More of the same old same old that got us into the mess. I don't doubt there are people without the capacity to understand you can't fix a mess in less time than it takes time to make it, but those of us with the intelligence to discern such things fully understand that a step backwards to what destroyed the economy in the first place will make what we've been through look like a picnic in the park (which doubtless must be a Sunday School picnic, since the issue of separation of church and state seems to be lost on many of the GOP contenders).
