Legislation sponsored by Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) to provide grant funding for historic preservation projects across the state and Burlington County was advanced by the Senate today.
The bipartisan legislation (S2788/A4113) appropriates approximately $1.4 million from the 2009 Historic Preservation Fund to provide historic site management grants for historic preservation projects, including $142,000 for projects in Bordentown City, Burlington City, Moorestown and Mount Laurel.
“It’s important that we preserve the many historical buildings and sites that make each of our communities unique,” said Allen. “These grants will go a long way in ensuring our children and grandchildren will be able to know where we came from. Historical sites are our living history books.
Senator Allen is an advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C.
“Knowing our past informs our present and helps us determine our path in the future – both as individuals and as a state,” Allen added.
The legislation provides $7,500 in grant funding for the Christ Church Cemetery in Bordentown City. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Burlington City is allocated $50,000. In Moorestown, the Perkins Center for the Arts will receive $34,000 and $50,000 has been appropriated for Jacob’s Chapel AME Church in Mount Laurel.
The legislation will now go to Governor Christie for approval.
