The United States Supreme Court (in a 5-4 decision but not along ideological lines) today ruled that California's voter-approved Proposition 8 was wrong to attempt to overrule a court decision allowing same-sex marriage in the nation's largest state, California.
This ruling effectively nullifies the will of the voters in California and allows gay marriage int hat state. So, those same-sex couples who were married in California prior to the approval of Proposition 8 (which attempted to undue same-sex marriage) are now legally married. And that applies for all same-sex couples who get married in California from this point onward.
Justices Roberts and Justice Scalia joined three liberal justices in this ruling.
