National Design Award-winner to visit Philadelphia Museum of Art, CHAD, and Roche Bobois in October
Designer Stephen Burks will take part in a three-event celebration of his achievements during DesignPhiladelphia in October 2016. Burks will conduct a workshop with students at the Charter High School for Architecture + Design, present an illustrated lecture at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and exhibit his recent work at Roche Bobois’ Old City showroom. The events are organized by Collab, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s friends group supporting modern and contemporary design; the Center for Architecture and Design; Stephen Burks Man Made; and Roche Bobois home décor.
Burks first collaborated with Roche Bobois in 2014 to design the European TRAVELER Hooded Armchair. In 2015, the Brooklyn-based designer became the first African American to win the National Design Award for product design. While the furniture and products created by his studio, Stephen Burks Man Made, reflect cutting-edge contemporary design, they also incorporate elements drawn from authentic craft traditions, including Senegalese basket-making and industrial manufacturing in a process he calls “returning the hand to industry.” Since 2005, Burks has consulted with nonprofits including Aid to Artisans, the Clinton Global Initiative, Design Network Africa, Artesanias de Colombia and the Nature Conservancy, uniting the artisan, the designer, and global brands. Burks has created designs for international clients including Boffi, Cappellini, Dedon, Harry Winston, Missoni, Swarovski, and Roche Bobois, who will host the exhibition of Burks’ work at Roche Bobois Philadelphia from October 7 through October 15, including a closing event on Saturday, October 15. His work can be seen at www.stephenburksmanmade.com.
“I'm looking forward to being part of such an exciting series of events that puts Philadelphia on the design calendar every year," said Burks. "Sharing my work with the students from CHAD, as well as all of the supporters of design in this great city, will be the highlight of my visit."
