Decades after she stepped down from the anchor desk, Broadcast Pioneer Marciarose Shestack, who co-anchored the country’s first Eyewitness News program at KYW-TV (CBS 3) in 1965 with the legendary Tom Snyder, will observe the 45th anniversary of the news format by anchoring the station’s news updates at noon today, Wednesday, September 15th on CBS 3.
News Director Al Primo changed the face of local news forever that year when he teamed up Shestack and Snyder for a new type of newscast in Philadelphia, one in which the reporters were seen on camera in addition to having the anchors report the stories. Eyewitness News changed the face of local news, launching hundreds of imitators nationwide and creating the newscast format that is the gold standard today.
Shestack will anchor the news updates in the station’s new noon show, Talk Philly, then join co-hosts Pat Ciarrocchi and Ukee Washington on the set to discuss the early years of TV news. Following the broadcast, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia will hold a special luncheon in celebration of the milestone.
“All of us at CBS 3 are proud of the pioneering role that the station played in the history of television,” says President and General Manager Jon Hitchcock. Over the years, the station continued its role as an innovator, breaking the color line to feature the market’s first African-American reporter, giving the market its first early morning newscast, being the first to broadcast in Stereo and High Definition and airing the first closed-captioned news among other firsts. Today, the station continues to be an innovator bringing viewers breaking news whenever and wherever they need it – on-air, online, on cell phones, and even at street-side newsstands.
“We take the legacy of Eyewitness News very seriously,” says Vice President and News Director Susan Schiller. “We are always aware of those that went before us and, like them; we keep our eye on what’s next and work every day to break new ground.”
CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
