It's not the kind of statistic you want to have hanging around your neck like an albatross.
But under President Obama, the poverty rate in America has hit a new high.
The Washington Post describes it as follows:
"One in seven Americans is living in poverty, the highest number in the half-century that the government has kept such statistics, the Census Bureau announced Thursday.
"Last year was the third consecutive year that the poverty rate climbesin part because of the recession, rising from 13.2 percent in 2008 to 14.3 percent, or 43.6 million people, last year."
According to the Post, those who work with the unemployed and the indigent say this is the worst economy and the most alarming level of poverty they've ever seen.
