From Flash News:
It takes true grit to shove grits down your pants.
At least for the contestants of the “Rollin’ In The Grits” competition at the 24th Annual World Grits Festival in St. George, South Carolina, happening tomorrow (Apr. 17) through Sunday (Apr. 19).
Participants have 10 seconds to roll around in a pool filled with 700 pounds of good ol’ southern grits, and the person covered in grits who weighs the most afterwards wins.
According to spokesperson Steve Franks, it’s the teenagers who get down to the true nitty gritty and fight a fierce battle in the pool.
He says, “They’re ruthless. They really go at it.”
However, other hardcore competitors have a few tricks up their sleeves to take down the teens.
Franks says many wear track suits inside out so the fleece fabric inside is exposed because grits tend to stick onto it better.
They’ll also put tape around their ankles and wrists so they can stuff as much grits down their pants without losing any of it.
