Best NJ Pizza: Camden, Burlington Counties

If you follow this blog you know that we love pizza.

We love fresh, crispy, tasty, aromatic, delicious pizza.
We're not terribly particular about where we enjoy the pizza just so long as it's good -- real good. And our test of a good pizza is the classic, unadulterated tomato and cheese pie because that's the very best way to judge a pizzeria. If they can't make the basic pie, fuhgeddaboudit!

So, in no particular order, here's our list for South Jersey's BEST pizzas in the greater Cherry Hill area:

BRICCO
This cozy Westmont pizzeria sits on a popular corner and serves a distinctive, ultra-crispy pizza cooked in an super high temp oven. You won't taste anything like this anywhere else and with one bite you'll know that there's love in this pie!

TACONELLI'S
On Main Street in Maple Shade you'll find the Jersey edition of this popular Philly pizza joint that has a cult like following. Taconelli's moved here from a place near the Moorestown Mall and this updated version is spacious, handsome, crowded and often noisy inside. But the pizza is absolutely divine!

BRUNO'S
Between Cuthbert Road and the Haddonfield border on Hopkins Road (just a stone's throw from Paul VI High School) you'll find a more traditional, thicker-crusted, tomatoey pizza that's perfect for a hearty appetite. Bruno's has been a mainstay here, and with good reason!

HOLY TOMATO
On the Black Horse Pike (Rte 168) in Blackwood, you'll find this place tucked so neatly alongside the road that it's easy to miss. The place is tiny, so you'd better get there early as they take no reservations and it fills up quickly. But you'll be rewarded with a nice menu including appetizers, salad, amazing desserts and best of all, tasty, tangy, thin-crust pizza choices that you'll never forget. Holy Tomato has it all!

TUTTI TOSCANI
For more than 30 years this original home of the Lamberti restaurant empire has been making some of the best pizza we've tasted anywhere. And not only is the margherita pizza superb (with celestial mozzarella) but Tutti offers a wide variety of variations. On Brace Road in Cherry Hill, this place is spacious, lively, distinctive and will have you returning again and again. To be sure, this ain't no pizza joint. Rather, it's a renowned Italian eatery that just happens to have incredible pizza as well.

MONTEGRILLO'S
This corner pizza mecca on Main Street in Maple Shade not only makes a wonderful hot, fresh, cooked-to-order traditional pizza but their thick, crusty, tangy tomato pie is one of the very best you'll taste no matter how far you search.

TRENO
Near the PATCO line on Haddon Avenue in Westmont, this big, sprawling "pizza bar" offers both wood-fire and brick-oven pizzas in many imaginative 12-inch varieties. Don't miss half-price pizza night every Wednesday. It's an amazing bargain!

PEOPLE'S PIZZA
Heading to or from the mall it's right there on Route 38 in Cherry Hill but you might miss it if you're not paying attention. Independently family owned and operated since 1974, this place is the one-and-only outlet of its type. Quick counter service, seat yourself booths and hot, gooey pizza make it a popular classic.

RAGAZZI
A bit further afield on Route 73 at Route 38 in Marlton, Ragazzi is a family eatery that offers traditional or Sicilian pizza and gives you the option of creating your own pie in nine inch or 16 inch versions. Always good and always fresh.

South Jersey's 10 Best Tastes - Cherry Hill Area

Let's be clear about this,
Our tastes in food are simple. We like good stuff, well-prepared.
It doesn't have to be fancy. It doesn't have to be haute cuisine. It just has to be basic, fresh, tasty and consistent. It has to be worth it.
And, our tastes lean toward Italian.
So, here, in no particular order, are our ten bests:

Passariello's Pizza
We like the new Passariello's in Haddonfield (so big, bright and spotless) but there are also locations in Vorhees and Moorestown. The pizza here is incredibly fresh and crisp. There are numerous varieties and you can even customize your order. Also available by the slice and it's marvelously crunchy!

Spaghetti and meatballs at Laberti's Tutti Toscanni
This is the original Lamberti restaurant in Cherry Hill, part of this popular family collection. The spaghetti is always al dente. The sauce is fragrant and not too spicy. The meatballs are simply the best. For this classic dish, this place never, ever fails!

Hamburgers at Zinburger
The burgers here are so wonderfully juicy that it's a small miracle. Even a well-done burger at this Cherry Hill hangout in Garden State Park remains ample and succulent. And the fresh cut fries are heavenly!

Cream donuts at Randoph's Bakery
OMG, how the luscious white sugar cream bursts from these powdery delights! In Maple Shade or Marlton, these donuts are so full they will astound you. And they're just sweet enough to keep you coming back.

Roselli's lasagna
The family recipes at Roselli's market in Medford will bring you right back to that big bountiful Sunday Italian table. We like the meat lasagna but all four take-home varieties are heaven. And here's the thing: the lasagna never falls apart; it cuts smoothly and perfectly, like a pound cake.

Pastina soup at Ragazzi
Save for the mozas ball soup at Ben's in Manhattan, this is the best soup of any kind that we've found anywhere. We don't know the secret of Ragazzi's in Marlton. We only know that they sell more pastina than anyplace else -- and with good reason!

Cheesesteaks at Chick's
Since 1957, Chick's deli has been delighting customers in Cherry Hill. Here you will find the tastiest and freshest cheesesteak -- the one that Philadelphia magazine awarded with its "best" title. It's nothing less than legendary. And oh, those rolls!

Gelato at Gelato Dolceria
You don't have to go into center city anymore for great gelato. Instead, it's right here on King's Highway in Haddonfield. And it's all genuine Italian with just the right texture and consistency. Great flavor selection, too!

Crispy jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce at Sakura Spring
At Sakura Spring in Cherry Hill, when they say "jumbo" shrimp they really mean it. Everything here is great but this is one of the standout dishes and chef specialities. And the atmosphere is wonderfully inviting and tranquilizing!

Filet mignon at Tavistock Country Club
If you're lucky, you know someone who's a member at Haddonfield's Tavistock (or a related club) who will invite you to enjoy the filet here. If you're even luckier, you're a member yourself. This club specializes in basic American fare with updated choices but the classic filet remains a joyous gift to carnivores. Cooked to perfection, according to your wishes!__

Special Foodie Treats: Check "Em Out Here!

Now for a quick tour of some summer eating goodies we've enjoyed this season:

We really LOVED this strawberry shortcake special dessert at California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). All fresh ingredients -- and the shortcake was fully supportive of all that sweetness and light. Plus, the dessert was free with our entree as a special CPK birthday treat!

Remember hearts of palm? Not exactly available everywhere anymore. But you can still find this treat at The Prime Rib in Philly, DC and Baltimore where the whole experience includes classic steaks, chops and seafood in a swanky supper club setting. We enjoyed our deviled-egg-festooned hearts of palm with a Brazilian lobster tail (in honor of the Olympics!) and a hot fudge sundae. LOVE the Prime Rib!

Are you wondering what this is? Well, it's basically shrimp with noodles, some cashews, green beans and a light but nonetheless zesty sauce. And it's a very popular dish at Harvest, the healthy-eating, fresh ingredients restaurant that you can find in several locations including Moorestown, Philly, Glen Mills and Radnor.

Now, sometimes after dinner we still have a need for a somewhat sweet treat. For that, we head to Kiwi frozen yogurt where we can enjoy ourselves with a dessert that won't leave us guilt ridden. Here, we topped no-sugar-added Irish cream with a a froyo called ice cream sandwich and then added just a bit of chocolate syrup. Mmmm!

On the way home from a recent trip to Denver, we were yearning for a fresh, crisp, thin pizza without any toppings -- just a pure, perfectly-made tomato and cheese pizza. Thank goodness for the Denver airport which featured a personal fave -- Wolfgang Puck. As soon as we saw the sign, we knew we were in the right place. The pizza was perfection!

OK, so this isn't very colorful but it remains an absolute standout. And it's as fragrant as it is delicious. It the simpatico spaghetti agilo e olio (spaghetti with garlic and oil) at Lamberti's original Tutti Toscani in Cherry Hill. It's not on the menu. You have to ask for it. But i's absolutely divine!

Catch any fish lately? We did, at McCormick & Schmick in Philadelphia where we enjoyed the pan-seared halibut with green beans and some fries (not shown) beautifully presented with lemon butter and sourdough bread. A real treat!
