New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has submitted a proposal to the Legislature to accomplish the conversion of New Jersey Network (NJN) from a government body to an independent entity, either to a non-profit corporation or through a sale or transfer of assets to an existing public broadcasting entity.
This should come as a surprise to no one. Christie stated his intention to make this move quite some time ago.
It's clear that New Jersey needs its own statewide TV channel and/or network.
And it's also clear that the state does not have the money to continue subsidizing NJN.
So, the question becomes: Who can save (buy) NJN and keep it alive?
Well, there are more than a few well-know zillionaires who proclaim their love for New Jersey. And many of them happen to be in the media and entertainment business already.
For example, what about Bruce Spingsteen? "The Boss" could become the boss of his own TV network and serve his beloved Garden State at the same time.
Or how about Jon Bon Jovi? This Perth Amboy, NJ native is an entertainment powerhouse and a self-proclaimed entrepreneur who's constantly talking about how he wants to help others. He can help us all by saving NJN.
Of course, Joe Piscopo is very civic minded. And he constantly shouts his love for the Garden State as well. Surely Joe made more than a few bucks from all those Saturday Night Live gigs and his frequent touring.
Come to think of it, maybe Bruce, Jon and Joe would like to get together and be the dollars and the brains behind a new New Jersey TV network.
And if even more partners are needed, just think: There's Jack Nicholson. And Danny DeVito. And let's not forget Martha Stewart (Martha Helen Kostrya of Jersey City) who is not only a hugely successful businesswoman but who also has experience running a media empire.
So many successful people in show business have reaped so much from New Jersey. Shouldn't they re-invest in our state?
All of these megawatt stars talk about how they LOVE New Jersey.
Well, here's a chance for them to do something to help our state -- and help themselves.
My message to them: C'mon! Put your dollars where your mouths are.
