Governor Chris Christie issued a proclamation directing that flags at the State House building be flown at half-staff from Friday, June 13, 2014 to Thursday, June 19, 2014 in recognition of the life and in mourning of the passing of Firefighter Robert “Hawk” Meyer. Firefighter Meyer was an active member of the Union Hose Fire Company #1 in Union Beach and a life member of the Belford Engine Company, Station 3, in Middletown.
In 2005, Firefighter Meyer was awarded a medal for his heroism by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for risking his own life to rescue a man from a tractor-trailer fire in 2004.
Firefighter Meyer tragically lost his life fighting a four-alarm fire in Union Beach.
