200 Years Ago: Our National Anthem Was Born!
200 years ago today, Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner.
The words of a poem Key wrote on that day entitled "Defence of Fort M'Henry" became the lyrics of our national anthem. The words were set to an old British tune. Key was a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in the Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
