It'll be quite the spectacle for the arena, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2016.
"We are thrilled to be hosting the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball East Regional at the Wells Fargo Center,” said Global Spectrum's Matt Homan, General Manager of Wells Fargo Center. "The arena was designed to lure big-time events to Philadelphia and it continues to live up to its reputation. We have an outstanding history with the NCAA and it's clear they enjoy coming to our facility."
“La Salle University is proud to work with the Wells Fargo Center and the Philadelphia Sports Congress to bring March Madness back to Philadelphia once again,” said La Salle University Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Brennan whose school will serve as the host institution. “Philadelphia is a great basketball city and we look forward to hosting a first-class event in March, 2016.”
Global Spectrum, the subsidiary of Comcast-Spectacor that operates the Wells Fargo Center, also secured the 2016 NCAA Men's Second and Third Round games at the arena the company operates in Des Moines, IA, the Wells Fargo Arena. In addition, the NCAA awarded the 2017 NCAA Final Four to the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ, also a Global Spectrum-managed venue.
Philadelphia has a storied history with the Men’s Tournament, having hosted the event 27 times since 1939, most recently when Temple University hosted the 2nd & 3rd Rounds at the Wells Fargo Center in 2013. The most historic East Regional of all time, the 1992 East Regional featuring the Duke Blue Devils and the Kentucky Wildcats, was played at the Spectrum, also in Philadelphia.
This will mark the 23rd NCAA Championship to be played in Philadelphia since the year 2000. Other upcoming NCAA Championships in Philadelphia include the 2015 & 2016 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Championships (at Lincoln Financial Field and PPL Park, respectively), and the 2017 NCAA Men’s College Cup (soccer) at PPL Park.
The Wells Fargo Center is no stranger to hosting prestigious NCAA national events and attractions. Most recently, the Wells Fargo Center has served as the host arena to the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four, the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Round games, the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships; the 2006 and 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds, the 2001 NCAA Men’s East Regionals, the 2000 NCAA Women's Final Four, and annual NCAA regular season ice hockey games between the University of Vermont and Penn State University.
"Special thanks to our friends at La Salle and Comcast-Spectacor for leading the charge on this bid effort,” said Philadelphia Sports Congress Executive Director Larry Needle. “We're thrilled to have a Regional back in Philadelphia, and looking forward to rolling out the red carpet for the NCAA and all of the visiting fans in 2016."
The event is estimated to generate approximately 5,000 hotel room nights and $10M in economic impact for the city.
Comcast–Spectactor (comcast-spectacor.com), which operates in 48 of the 50 United States, is the Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment company which owns the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL), the home arena for both the Flyers and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, the Wells Fargo Center, and four Flyers Skate Zone community ice skating and hockey rinks.
