We recently enjoyed BOOM: Art and Design in the 1940s which runs through September 1 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
We loved the scope and the diversity of the exhibition which takes the viewer through the war years and up to the edge of the midcentury era. Obviously, the 1940s witnessed major shifts in politics, science, economics, industry, the arts, and culture and all of these coincided with a time of scarcity, limitation, and the catastrophic global conflict of World War II. Artists and designers often had to make do with whatever materials they could cobble together. This challenge, in many ways actually inspired them.
Throughout this period, artists brought new ideas to their work across media, from fashion and textiles, craft and design, to printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, and sculpture.
This exhibition showcases art from across the decade, featuring works drawn entirely from the museum’s vast permanent collections. It's quite impressive and highly recommended. Enjoy some of our photos from the show, below.
