KAWS' Art Engages With Vivid Color, Whimsy

The KAWS exhibit closed today at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Pafa) in center city Philadelphia  but the vivid colors and high spirits of the show live on.

In case you missed it, above are some of the delightful sculptures and paintings that were on display amidst Pafa's more traditional holdings.

Brooklyn-based, KAWS is a world-renowned artist who exhibits in museums and galleries internationally. KAWS’ art stands within the historical continuum that began with Pop Art, straddling the line between fine art and global commerce. His artworks are immediately recognizable as he transforms iconic pop culture characters into thought-provoking works of art. His work possesses a sophisticated humor while utilizing a refined graphic language that revitalizes figuration with big, bold gestures and keen, playful intricacy.

By producing fine art via thoughtful interplay with consumer products and collaborations with global brands, KAWS moves beyond the sphere of the exclusive art market to occupy a more complex, global market.

KAWS was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts. KAWS’ museum exhibitions include solo shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut. His work can be seen at galleries internationally, including Galerie Perrotin, Paris, Hong Kong, and New York; and Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles, California.

Romney Reacts To MSNBC's Sick Family Joke

On Saturday, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry offered an emotional, tearful apology for a New Year's weekend segment that used Kieran Romney's appearance in a Romney family photo as a setup for jokes about diversity, and became a full-blown media conflagration. On Sunday, former Governor Mitt Romney appeared on Fox News Sunday to address the controversy, which host Chris Wallace called "a disgraceful political attack on a baby."

Last Sunday, Melissa Harris-Perry moderated a panel that set upon a Romney family photo as the pivot point for jokes about Republican lack of diversity. Harris-Perry's own remarks were relatively innocuous, but panelist Pia Glenn sang "One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn't the same" upon the photo's introduction, and comedian Dean Obeidallah joked "I think this picture is great. It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person."

Friedman: Rare, Rising GOP Star in Camco!

From our friends at the Save Jersey Blog:

Friedman 2

It’s reorganization season. Snow be damned.

Hundreds of elected officials are being sworn into new terms across New Jersey this week, Save Jerseyans, and Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno is resuming her election cycle role as the NJ GOP’s official ambassador by participating in as many ceremonies as possible.

She was in heavily-Democratic Camden County last night to administer the oath of office to our friend, newly-reelected Voorhees Township Committeeman Mike Friedman (R), the only Republican in the municipal legislative body but one who was reaffirmed by the townships voters with a large margin of victory.

Mike’s wife and kids were present, as were their two twins who are still on the way (look closely above). Great stuff!
