After we left the circus last night we found ourselves at the Franklin Fountain at 116 Market, St. in Philadelphia's Old City.
It was late on a weeknight and we wanted ice cream.
We wanted fresh, old-fashioned ice cream at a soda fountain.
We wanted home-made, hand-dipped ice cream.
We wanted an ice cream sundae.
We wanted hot fudge and vanilla ice cream and malt; sorta like a hot fudge, dusty roads sundae.
And we found it all at the Franklin Fountain - a genuine turn of the century ice cream parlor that feels like a step back in time.
Our sundae was lovingly constructed by Franklin Fountain co-proprietor Eric Berley. Eric told us how he established Philadelphia's most-authentic ice creamery five years ago with his brother, Ryan. The brothers (pictured above) now live and work on the premises and their attentiveness to the business shows in every detail.
You'll love everything about Franklin Fountain: the tile floor, the tin ceiling, the unusual ceiling fan, the ornate bar, the marble counter top, the antique touches and the bust of Benjamin Franklin himself.
But most of all, you'll love the ice cream. It's smooth, creamy, unadulterated. It's a dream come true. And the place also features baked-on-site fruit pies and homemade cakes.
But we came for the ice cream and we were not disappointed.
Franklin Fountain is an original: genuine, personal, clever and whimsical.
Open noon till 11 PM Sunday through Thursday (to accomodate your late-night cravings) and 12 till midnight on Friday and Saturday (to accommodate your later night cravings).
