If you missed the 63rd Annual Tony Awards show last night you missed the best Tony show in years.
From the spectacular opening number to Neil Patrick Harris' clever closing which celebrated the whole evening in rhyme the entire show was a blast.
The production values were high. The setting was grand. The stars were appropriately stellar. And the entertainment was first rate.
In fact, the New York Times is reporting today that the ratings for the broadcast on CBS were the best since 2006, and included double-digits gains over last year’s ratings among total viewers and key adult demographic groups, according to data released by CBS this afternoon.
About 1.2 million more people watched the Tony Awards on Sunday night than in 2008. In addition, compared to last year’s broadcast, the Sunday night show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris was up 11 percent among total households, 20 percent among adults age 25-54, and 18 percent among adults 18-49, according to the Nielsen data.
Beyond the opening number my favorite moments included the special tribute to Jerry Herman and appearances by Angela Lansbury, Frank Langella, Liza Minelli, Anne Hathaway (pictured with Will Swenson) and Dolly Parton.
Kudos to everyone involved!
