There’s a secret market for hair out there, and long, healthy locks are generously rewarded. TheHairTrader.com is a site where folks all over the world can buy and sell their hair.
Sellers post ads that feature pictures and descriptions of their manes, and buyers – who are usually in the wig industry – sweep in to purchase the hair.
Founder Jacalyn Elise says many folks use the site to make a quick buck, and the highest amount paid for hair to date is $2,600. She says long, natural, “virgin” hair usually sells best, and can go for an average of $150-300.
If the hair is uncut it earns even higher profits since the buyer can then request the specific handling of the hair, like whether they want it shipped in a ponytail or braid.
While there’s a market for all textures, colors, and types of hair, Elise says straight hair with a little natural wave is typically in high demand.
Those with coveted tresses can often name their price to buyers.
