It's been well-known for quite some time that Debbie Reynolds has a vast collection of Holyywood memorabilia -- a collection that the 78-year-old star has been accumulating for decades.
The collection includes the iconic ruby slippers and dress worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, the fur coat worn by Orson Welles in Citizen Kane and Marilyn Monroe's subway dress from The Seven Year Itch. How much is it all worth? Probably $50 million or more.
For some time it was thought that Reynolds would display the collection in Hollywood, perhaps at a movie museum. Then, Reynolds said she hoped to display the collection at her own hotel/casino in Las Vegas. But the casino eventually closed and the collection was never displayed.
The pieces of the collection have been housed in Vegas, Hollywood and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Why Pigeon Forge? Because the latest plan was to show the collection at Belle Island Village, a proposed tourist attraction in Pigeon Forge. But a crashed real-estate market and the bad economy forced investors to abandon the Pigeon Forge project.
So now, Debbie's son Todd Fisher says the collection will be auctioned off by Christie's in New York sometime between now and June.
How sad that this extraordinary collection will apparently be broken apart and sold off piece-by-piece.
We'll keep you posted on this story as it continues to develop.
