Baseball Hall-of-Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn has announced that he has cancer of the salivary gland.
Gwynn says the the doctors have told him that the cancer is aggressive but slow moving. He says he's going to move fast and be agressive in treating it.
He claims the cancer has been detected early. He will need seven to eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatment.
Gwynn had several rounds of surgery to remove tumors in the parotid gland over the years but they had all be found to be benign. This time, it's malignant.
Gwynn fears the cancer may be linked to his habit of using chewing tobacco but doctors say there are no studies linking the product to this type of cancer.
Gwynn is the baseball coach at his alma mater, San Diego State University, where he has worked since 2003. He plans to return to the university upon completion of his treatment.
