Trying To Capitalize On 'Vitriol': It's Shameless!

Were there people who hated Ronald Reagan? Damned right there were.
As a public official, was he targeted? You bet he was.
Was the opposition to him vitriolic and were there death threats against him? Yes.
Did a deranged person try to kill him -- and almost succeed? Yes.
But no one seemed to blame the assassination attempt then on the temper of the times and (absent any additional evidence) no one should do it now.
What we're witnessed now is nothing but bald political opportunism, pure and simple. Though it was predictable (some people didn't even wait until the name of the alleged gunman was known) it's still shameless grandstanding. And it's unconscionable.
