Collegiate Rugby Championship Results

After six games apiece over the two-day tournament, Dartmouth and Army were crowned the 2011 Men’s and Women’s Collegiate Rugby Champions, respectively, in the 2011 Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) at PPL Park in Chester on Sunday, June 5.

In the Men’s final, Dartmouth took the early lead 5-0 with a quick come-back before Army tied the match 5-5 with a little over two minutes into the championship. Dartmouth answered less than one minute later, pulling ahead 12-5. Before the end of the first half, Dartmouth was up 17-5.

Dartmouth sustained the lead in the second half and with 3:15 left in the match, they had increased their lead 32-10 over Army, with a final score of 32-10. The Big Green will take the Dawkin’s Cup (named after American Rugby Legend Pete Dawkins) and a $20,000 donation from GoDaddy.com back to Dartmouth.

Both Army and Dartmouth finished the first day of the tournament 3-0. Dartmouth (Pool B) defeated defending champions, Utah, 17-12, Notre Dame 24-19, and Boston College 36-0. Army (Pool C) defeated Central Washington 14-12, and Navy 19-15.

Army defeated the Penn State in the Women’s Finals 14-5 and will bring the CRC Trophy back to West Point. The face-off was a rematch of the Division 1 National Championship, played on May 14 at Steuber Rugby Stadium at Stanford University, where Army beat Penn State 33-29. Army women’s club also received a $3,000 donation from GoDaddy.com.

Utah took home the Men’s Bronze medal after defeating Central Washington 12-10. LSU beat Notre Dame 24-0 in the Challenger Bracket men’s final.

Based on the success of the 2011 CRC, the national tournament will return to PPL Park in Chester, PA in 2012, announced during NBC’s live broadcast on Sunday, June 5. The 2011 CRC featured 16 of the top collegiate men’s rugby clubs and eight of the top collegiate women’s rugby clubs in a two-day tournament with 38 matches. The weekend-long rugby festival also included live entertainment from rock band Dropkick Murphys, gourmet food carts, rugby youth interactive area, high school combine, international beer garden and rugby legends.

The official attendance for the 2011 CRC was 10,283 on Saturday, June 4 and 7,611 on Sunday, June 5.
