NewJjersey Governor Chris Christie issued the following statement to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“Today, we honor the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man whose life was an inspiration. He urged all of us against violence, for equality and for judging all people by the content of their character. Dr. King was a pastor, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, author and steadfast advocate for securing the enactment of the 1964 Civil Right Act, the 1965 Voting Right Act and the 1968 Fair Housing Act. More importantly, he was an unwavering champion of the very principles our nation was predicated upon and ensuring America lived up to those principles.
I encourage all New Jerseyans to join in this observance through acts and deeds of service in their respective communities throughout the state.”
New Jersey, under Governor Tom Kean, was the first state to establish a Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission in 1983, which continues to ensure Dr. King’s life and work are recognized across the state with a variety of programs throughout the year.
Governor Christie also issued a proclamation marking Monday, January 15, 2018 “Martin Luther King, Jr. Day” throughout New Jersey.
