Frank Rizzo: The Mayor Philadelphians Never Forgot
Today marked the 20th anniversary of the death of one of the most legendary figures in Philadelphia history -- Frank L. Rizzo.
Rizzo served as Police Commissioner and then as Mayor of the city during a tumultuous period. He was a towering figure both literally and figuratively.
His sudden death in 1991 sent shock waves though the city.
At the time he was attempting a political comeback -- seeking an unprecedented third term at the helm of the city. He was loved by some, hated by others and feared by many.
It's been suggested that he was the last bigger-than-life mayor in big city America.
Frank Rizzo left his mark on Philadelphia and Philadelhians (indeed, people in the entire region) will not soon forget him.
