Before she died Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis taped a series of candid interviews with the late historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Schlesinger was a longtime Kennedy aide and the author of A Thousand Days, one of the definitive books on the Kennedy years.
Jackie stipulated that the tapes of the interviews could not be released until 50 years after her death. Reportedly, Jackie feared retaliation against her and her family for what she would say in the interviews.
But now, Caroline Kennedy has agreed to the release of the tapes and it's reported that ABC TV will air a special surrounding the tapes and their content in mid September.
These tapes are said to be explosive. Here's what some reports say the tapes contain:
--Jackie's suspicion that Lyndon Johnson and a group of Texas tycoons were actually behind the assassination of President Kennedy; that they conspired to have him murdered.
--Jackie's knowledge of her husband's active libido and his many affairs. Jackie reportedly says she knew of his affair with a Hollywood starlet and that she also knew that President Kennedy had an affair with a 19-year-old White House intern.
--Jackie's admission of her own affairs with actor William Holden and a prominent Italian businessman and member of the jet set. Jackie reportedly implies her own affairs were launched in retaliation against her husband's infidelities.
--Confirmation by Jackie that she and her husband were working through their relationship at the time of his assassination and that their apparent reconciliation led them to discuss having another child together.
We don't know for sure if these reports are true.
So much is speculation at this point.
We shall have to wait and see if the tapes are eventually revealed and exactly what they tell us.
