Jerry Lewis -- the man who created the modern-day TV telethon as a powerful fund-rasining vehicle -- had been abruptly dropped as Chair of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and host of its annual Labor Day telethon.
So, for the first time in 45 years, Jerry Lewis will not be pleading for donations in front of a camera Labor Day weekend.
Yes, he's been dismissed as the host of the MDA telethon. This is an event that most of us grew up with -- one that draws attention to the childhood disease and the need to find a cure.
According to reports, the MDA says the 85-year-old legendary comedian would not appear on this year's telethon, and would no longer serve as its national chairman, a position he held for nearly 60 years. The telethons have raised nearly $2.5 billion, the MDA says.
There appears to be no further explanation other than that.
This is outrageous. It's a disgrace.
And it has already provoked a strong public outcry including criticism from many other comedians and entertainers.
