He was one of the most droll (and most familiar) presences in all of TV history.
He was Harry Morgan, the prolific character actor best known for playing the acerbic but kindly Colonel Potter in the long-running television series “M*A*S*H.”
Morgan died Wednesday morning at his home in Los Angeles. He was 96. His son Charles confirmed his death. Morgan had recently been treated for pneumonia.
Morgan, also appeared with Jack Webb in in the long-running TV series "Dragnet".
But Harry Morgan was more than a TV star.
In more than 100 movies, Morgan often played Western bad guys. He often appeared as characters with names like Rocky and Shorty. He also played loyal sidekicks, judges, sheriffs, soldiers and even thugs as well as police chiefs.
In more recent years you may remember him from appearances on shows such as “The Love Boat, “ “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “You Can’t Take It With You,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “The Jeff Foxworthy Show.”

With a long-running show that had the kinds of cast changes M*A*S*H did, there's much debate on which "era" was better. Ultimately, I believe the "Col. Potter" era was ultimately better for M*A*S*H, thanks both to Morgan's acting and the more richly textured character that was Sherman T. Potter. Morgan infused his character with a genuine blend of stern leader, bemused "father" to his charges, and wise adviser to the patients who passed through the 4077th. It still stands in my opinion as one of the greatest shows in TV history, and Mr. Morgan was one of the reasons.
