NEW SEATS & NEW LEADERS:  BERGEN COUNTY MAYORAL PICK UPS
Following our successful 2014 election cycle, we’re kicking off a series of features to highlight our Republican candidates who picked up new seats for the party in key regions across the state. For our first installment, we’re featuring the three mayoral seats we picked up in Bergen County – including Bogota, North Arlington, and Haworth.

Bogota: Mayor Chris Kelemen
Chris Kelemen was officially sworn in as Mayor of Bogota on Thursday, November 20th after defeating the Democrat incumbent in a close and competitive race. After serving for three years on Bogota’s Board of Education, Kelemen was elected to the council last November, becoming the first Republican to serve in Bogota since 2010. Since incumbent Tito Jackson was appointed by the council following Mayor McHale’s resignation last year, Kelemen was sworn in shortly after election day and will serve out the final year of the seat’s term before it is up for a full term next November.. For that reason, be sure to stay updated on Mayor Kelemen’s first year in office and look out for ways you can help his re-election next year.

North Arlington: Joseph Bianchi
Prior to this year’s election, Joseph Bianchi served on the council and was re-elected to his third term in November of 2013. But this year, Bianchi defeated his two-term Democrat incumbent Pete Massa in the race for Mayor of North Arlington by an impressive 56-44 point margin. As a lifelong North Arlington resident, as well as a volunteer firefighter and owner of a local barber shop, Joseph Bianchi has deep roots in the community and extensive experience in local government. Throughout the campaign, Bianchi stressed his focus on a range of local issues from stabilizing taxes to working with creating a cleaner and safer community for children and families.

Haworth:  John Smart
Mayor-elect John Smart won an outstanding victory this November after defeating Haworth’s Democratic Mayor John Dean DeRienzo, who had held the position since 1987. Currently John serves as the Library Board Treasurer, but previously served as a member of the council from 2002 to 2005. Although will will not be sworn in as Mayor until January, John is already gearing up to deliver the results he campaigned on. Throughout his campaign, John highlighted excessive debt and taxes as issues that must be addressed. As a result, John is already preparing to put his words into action on a three part plan to address the borough’s debt as mayor.
