April 22 will mark the 60th anniversary of opening day for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. The Fair ran from spring to autumn in '64 and '65. For those of us who were there (OMG, is that really me in the photo below!) it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and remains a treasured memory.
I was a teenager at the time and was just preparing to graduate high school. I went to the fair with a friend. I'm thinking maybe we took a bus to Manhattan and then hopped on a subway and elevated to Queens which is where the fair was. Or maybe it was a bus excursion directly to the fair. In either event, it was a day trip and we made a full day of it -- a very full day!
Some of the attractions I remember: the Vatican pavilion featuring Michaelangelo's Pieta, the Traveler's Insurance pavilion (shaped like a big red umbrella) with a film called "To Be Alive", General Motors' wonderful Futurama ride, General Electric's Carousel of Progress highlighting the all-electric home of the future, the Uniroyal Tire giant tire ferris wheel, the unisphere central theme attraction (still standing!), the delicious Belgian waffles caressed by whipped cream and strawberries and Ford's debut of the Mustang, one of the most successful automobiles ever.
Enjoy the photos (and video!) as we remember a special time in America's history.
