The fastest growing segment of home office workers is people regularly bringing home work with them, according to research firm IDC. Technology advances such as ubiquitous broadband and low-cost notebook PCs and smart phones are making it hard for workers to leave their jobs behind at day’s end, says IDC analyst Justin Jaffe.
A third of U.S. households now say they have a home office either for their own business or telecommuting and after-hours work. Of the 39.6 million U.S. households with home offices, 61% are for after-hours work, IDC reported Thursday.
Last year, 24.2 million U.S. households had offices for corporate after-hours work, IDC says. That compares with 8.5 million for telecommuters and 19 million for home-based businesses. And after-hours work is growing faster than those other segments, Jaffe says.
