According to the latest reports, family and friends have been summoned to say their final goodbye to the legendary coach and football icon -- indeed, the man who epitomized Penn State University.
Paterno, 85 years old, was the Head Coach of the Penn State football program for 46 years until he was let ago in 2011 after the arrest of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky for child sexual abuse charges. He still resides near the university in State College, PA.
Paterno was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after his termination. He was said to have been devastated by the scandal and the way that he was dismissed.
In a recent interview he tried to explain his actions with regard to the scandal. Paterno himself has never been implicated in the alleged crime and reportedly followed appropriate procedure in handling the matter the way he did.
