Celebrate Fall With PHS
Join PHS for three great events that celebrate the homegrown harvest. The PHS Fall Garden Festival comes to the Navy Yard on Saturday, September 21, the PHS Meadowbrook Farm Open House is Saturday October 5, and PHeaSt returns on October 18 with local chefs and growers. Read more below!

PHS Fall Garden Festival

Saturday, September 21, 10:00 am – 7:00 pm

Start the harvest season at the PHS Fall Garden Festival at the Navy Yard. New offerings include a PHS City Harvest Market; a Make & Take activity; a 6ABC Scarecrow Challenge giveaway; music; a sneak peek at the 2014 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show; and a Harvest Happy Hour from 4 to 7 pm, hosted by PHS Young Friends. PHS members receive exclusive benefits at the festival, including free plants and a 10% shopping discount at the PHS Store. Join or renew your membership at the festival and receive free bulbs plus a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to the nursery of your choice.

PHS Garden Visits 
Sunday, September 29, 12:00–5:00 pm
The PHS Garden Visits will showcase outstanding gardens in and around Princeton, New Jersey. These self-guided tours are an exclusive benefit for PHS members and their guests. In addition to wonderful private gardens, this year's tour includes an inspiring outdoor school garden; a local, sustainable family farm and market; and three gardens at Princeton University. Join us for the second-annual PHeaSt, celebrating urban growers and culinary masters. Last year’s event was a sold-out success, and this edition promises to be even more mouth-watering. Thirty chefs, including Aimee Olexy (Talula’s Garden), Daniel Stern (R2L), Al Paris (Heirloom), Mitch Prensky (Supper), Rafael Gonzalez (Fountain Restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia), Jeffrey Power (Dettera Restaurant and Wine Bar), and more, will collaborate with ten PHS City Harvest growers to create amazing dishes that are truly garden-to-table. PHS Young Friends – Party in the Pop Up

Fantastic Fall Programs from PHS

PHS offers a cornucopia of programs this fall. Enjoy an outdoor colored-pencil class at the Philadelphia Museum of Art beginning 9/10, take a tour of the PECO green roof on 9/17, or practice the art of garden photography at Hortulus Farm on 9/18. Come tobeautiful Chanticleer in Wayne, Pa, for evening walks and talks on a variety of topics on 9 /25, 9/26, 10/2 & 10/3. And join us for the inaugural presentation of the Eugene and Marie-Louise Jackson Evening Lecture Series at PHS on Tuesday, 10/8: “Three Seasons of Outrageous Color” by Kerry Ann Mendez. PHS Training Programs Gear Up for Fall

Get your greening creds through PHS’s signature training programs, PHS Tree Tenders, PHS Garden Tenders, and PHS Green City Teachers, which begin new classes this fall. PHS Tree Tenders offers three locations: in Bucks County starting 9/12, at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum beginning 9/17, and at PHS Headquarters beginning 10/ 2. PHS Garden Tenders offers Garden Tenders 101: Organizing a Community Garden, on 9/7 at PHS, and Garden Tenders 102, which will teach you about fall gardening on 9/25 at PHS. PHS Green City Teachers classes, starting 10/17, help educators incorporate gardening and greening into their curricula. VisitPHSonline.org for details.

PHS Greening Programs
PHS Teams Up with The Nature Conservancy
PHS and The Nature Conservancy have announced a new partnership to protect trees in the Philadelphia region. To kick off the partnership, PHS and the Conservancy present three free programs on Tuesday, 9/10 at PHS headquarters, including a program on tree health, a walking tour of PHS urban greening sites, and an evening reception. The events are free, but registration is requested. More information.

PHS Opens Mantua Urban Peace Garden This fall, PHS will celebrate the opening of the Mantua Urban Peace Garden, at 37th and Brown streets in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia. The Mantua Urban Peace Garden will be a beautiful flower and vegetable garden for all to enjoy. It will serve as a Green Resource Center and growing space for PHS City Harvest, and will include community garden beds for neighborhood gardeners. Join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, 10/1 at 1:30 pm, or if you'd like, volunteer to help build the garden on 9/14 at 9:30 am. Contact Tammy Leigh DeMent for more information.

Help Plant Trees in Wilmington Join PHS and its Plant One Million partner, the Delaware Center for Horticulture, on Friday, 9/27 to help plant trees in Wilmington, Delaware. With support from the city of Wilmington, TD Bank, and the Arbor Day Foundation, 80 trees will be planted by volunteers. The event is rain or shine (unless there is a downpour) and lunch will be provided.To volunteer, please pre-register by emailing Marcia Stephenson or call her at 302-658-6262 x105. Vacant Land Conference in Philadelphia PHS will co-host a national conference, “Reclaiming Vacant Properties,” 9/9 through 9/11 in Philadelphia. It will highlight the PHS Philadelphia LandCare program operated in partnership with the city. Coordinated by the Center for Community Progress, the conference includes mobile sessions that visit neighborhood lots cleaned and greened by PHS, training workshops, breakout sessions, and more. PHS Meadowbrook Farm Fall Open House

Celebrate the season at the annual fall Open House on 10/5 at PHS Meadowbrook Farm. Fall is for Planting
Visit PHS Meadowbrook Farm this fall to find beautiful and unusual plants for autumn landscapes, including fall-blooming perennials; one-of-a-kind combination planters, spring bulbs; and vibrant violas, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Gorgeous mums in red, orange, yellow, bronze, and purple are now available. Later this month, look for unique varieties of fairytale pumpkins, black acorn and carnival squash, gooseneck gourds, and mini pumpkins. The gift shop will feature seasonal home décor and garden accessories, including garden gear and tools.
