Kicking Off A Special Week With Noted Honors!

Catholic Social Services (CSS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will kick off National Volunteer Week (April 23-29) by announcing the 2017 CSS Volunteer of the Year in a special ceremony at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center.

Each year, CSS recognizes a dedicated volunteer who has made significant contributions to a particular program. The recipient of this year’s award will be Ms. Mary Stock, who is a parishioner of Saint Katharine Drexel parish in the City of Chester.

Auxiliary Bishop John McIntyre will present this award and highlight Ms. Stock’s impact on CSS’ ministerial outreach to those in need.

Ms. Amy Stoner, Director of Community-based and Homeless Services of CSS, along with last year’s Volunteer of the Year, Reverend Anthony Orth, Pastor of Saint Gabriel Parish in Norwood (Delaware County) and Chaplain of CSS’ Chester City Family Service Center Coffee Club, will be in attendance to offer additional remarks.

Ms. Stock is one of over 3,200 CSS volunteers who provided a combined total of nearly 60,000 volunteer hours to the Church’s works of charity last year. After retiring as a nurse more than three years ago, she began volunteering at the Chester City Family Service Center Coffee Club, a drop-in service for the homeless and needy. She has worked tirelessly to expand the Club’s activities program; assisted with “Club Member” field trips to Longwood Gardens, Linvilla Orchards, and Citizen’s Bank Park; and transports men and women to the Family Service Center, Church, doctor’s appointments and more.

National Volunteer Week is promoted each year by the Points of Light Foundation, and seeks to inspire, recognize and encourage people to engage in volunteer service and make a difference in their local communities.

Note: CSS’ Volunteer and Community Relations Program facilitates opportunities for individuals and groups to provide support and assistance to CSS programs in both one-time and ongoing volunteer commitments.
