On Friday, July 11, 2025, Second Lady Usha Vance joined Blue Star Families at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California to spotlight her Summer Reading Challenge and spend the day with Blue Star children. These are the children of US military members who are currently serving in the armed forces.
As part of her effort to share her love of reading and spread the word about the Second Lady’s Summer Reading Challenge series, Ms. Vance read a story to the Blue Star children and passed out personalized bookmarks for the children to use during their next summer reading adventure. She also took part in arts and crafts activities with the Blue Star Families and children, including coloring, making friendship bracelets, and decorating felt flags. The event also included a book fair for families to explore and leave with new reads to enjoy all summer.“Thank you to the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton and to its partners for inviting me to join Blue Star Families in celebrating reading and creating memories. My family enjoyed sharing this special day of learning with other families,” said Second Lady Usha Vance
